Gold declined for the third consecutive day amid signs of possible progress in U.S.-China trade talks, reducing demand for safe-haven assets.

The precious metal dropped by as much as 0.6% before stabilizing near $3,275 per ounce.

On Wednesday, gold retreated further from its record high reached last week, despite data showing that the U.S. economy contracted in early 2025 for the first time since 2022, due to a surge in imports ahead of new tariffs.

This contraction led traders to increase bets on interest rate cuts in the U.S., with four quarter-point reductions priced in for this year, aiming to avoid a recession. Lower interest rates are typically supportive of gold, as the metal does not yield interest.

Gold has surged about 25% since the start of the year, driven primarily by strong investor demand for safe havens amid volatile Trump-era trade policies and rising fears of a global slowdown.

This rally has also been supported by increased flows into gold-backed ETFs, central bank purchases, and signs of speculative demand in China, even as actual consumption in the world’s largest gold buyer has declined.
